It all began with a casual walk down the discount aisle
at the local grocery store
carts full of past-their-prime products.
I can relate
cuz I’m always on a budget.
Salad dressing. Wait till summer.
Soup. I can make my own, less sodium.
Other stuff, dumb stuff, packaged stuff
Yuck stuff.
Then I saw the chocolate chips.
Nestles, a name brand.
$3.00 for a lot. A lot.
I can’t begin to imagine
the savings cuz I’ve never bought them before
but maybe before
when I was 16 or 17
I remember a day
of making cookies with a friend.
I buy them because they’re on sale
with no idea of price comparison.
No idea of life comparison
I just need a deal
I need a deal.
And maybe I need a treat.
Maybe I need a taste of a memory.
Two weeks later now I try
to resurrect the memory.
They were past their prime when I bought them
But I’ve gotten used
to
used.
I’ll let you know how they turn out
I promise.
